DIABETES AWARENESS COMMITTEE

The prime goal of Lions International is the preservation of sight. Diabetes is a disorder of metabolism in which people have problems converting food to energy. It is the leading cause of adult blindness (age 20 - 75), kidney failure, non-traumatic amputations and cardiovascular disorders (diabetics are 60% more likely to have heart attacks and/or strokes). Diabetes is rated the fifth cause of death in the U.S.A. according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Updated statistics shows 17 million with Diabetes and 16 million with Pre-diabetes. The CDC officially considers this data an “epidemic”. Thus 33 million people are diabetic or will become diabetic shortly, unless they are screened, treated, and controlled. CDC predicts there will be 50 million diabetics in the U.S.A. by 2030. 90%-95% of all diabetes is Type Two for which there is no cure.

LIONS INTERNATIONAL YOUTH CAMP AND EXCHANGE PROGRAM

The Lions Youth Exchange Program is founded upon the first object of Lionism: To create and foster a spirit of understanding among the people of the world.

The Lion's Youth Exchange Program (YEP) was conceived to afford today's youth, the leaders and parents of tomorrow, an opportunity to learn more about people and countries other than their own.

The first exchange was conducted in 1962 between Japan and California-Nevada. We now exchange with Europe, Scandinavia, Malaysia, Peru, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and several other countries.

The tremendous growth of the YEP throughout Lions International has received increased recognition for its positive contributions towards a better world of understanding.

This is a very ambitious program that requires support from club to MD level. To become involved contact your District Youth Camp and Exchange Chairperson.

THE EAR OF THE LION FOUNDATION, INC.

The Hearing Foundation, a nonprofit, 501(c)3, Foundation was formed by Lions Clubs of California/Nevada in 1982. The Foundation is dedicated to assist qualified low income hearing-impaired people unable to afford the care they need to hear better, and issues hearing aids from its hearing aid bank at a nominal fee. Member Lions Clubs are encouraged to seek out patients in their community who might benefit from our services. Lions are encouraged to collect and send hearing aids no longer being used to our office.

The Foundation is funded by two primary sources. Lions Clubs can become a member club by pledging to make a semi-annual donation to the Foundation of $3.75 per active member. Individual Lions and other friends of the Foundation may become Tosch Fellowships, Life Members or Alexander Graham Bell Fellows by donating $250, $500 or $ 1,000 respectively, to the Foundation. The principal received from these donations is permanently invested and not spent. Investment income may be used only for patient care expenses.

Officers and Directors of the Foundation are available and anxious to make presentations of club and cabinet meetings. If you would like to arrange a presentation, please call or write our office.
